Nanping situated in the north of Fujian Province, lying at the southeast side of the Wuyi mountain range, longitude 117°12' to 119°12' east and latitude 26°14' to 28°02' north. It borders on Jiangxi province in the west and adjoins Zhejiang province in the north, connecting to the coastal and inland areas, and it is also called "Northern Gateway" OF Fujian. It is the headstream of Minjiang River due to the joint of Jian Stream, Futun Stream and Shaxi Stream. Nanping has an area of 26,300 square kilometers and is the largest administrative division in Fujian Province governing 1 district (the Yanping District), 4 cities (Wuyishan, Jianyang, Jian'ou and Shaowu) and 5 counties (Shunchang, Pucheng, Guangze, Songxi and Zhenghe). This area features with chains of mountains, rivers in length and breadth and rich water resources and is a typical erosive physiognomy with middle-lower hilly land. It is a city regarded as the ecosystem barrier of the upriver of Minjiang River. GuoMoruo, a neoteric poet, praises Nanping as "Green around with mountains and clean all round with rivers." |
