We stayed at the Wenguan hotel with my parents in law. The hotel is in a nice location, though far from the city centre, the surroundings are beautiful and the air is fresh. However I was embarrassed (for our guests) that we had to pay 4-star prices (628 rmb/night) for our rooms, which was far from 4 stars by Beijing standards. When we arrived the bathroom had not been cleaned (trash in the trash can, used hand soap), and when we asked them to clean there was no water involved in the cleaning, just an emptying of the trash and supplying new towels and soap. The carpets in the rooms were absolutely disgusting, however the bed linnens were clean. The hotel is a typical Chinese standard hotel, and they have the necessary facilities, cable TV etc. I didn''t mind staying there for one night, and I had been warned that hotels in Chengde are bad, but I did feel it was way overpriced. I wish they would follow a system for hotel rating, so that 4 star hotels in Chengde would be similar standard to 4 star hotels in Beijing.
