A Decent Value
This hotel strives for above average service. The staff is alert, tries hard, and obviously aspires to a higher standard than is common in this kind of mid-level, low cost Haikou hotel, even if the service sometimes seems a bit off-key. For instance, since I had ordered a ‘no-smoking’ room, an attendant came in and kindly removed the ash trays. In the evening, the attendant came in again, turned down the bed cover (like in the uptown places), and left a plate of cookies and a small cardboard carton of milk with attached straw. I did enjoy the ‘welcome fruit plate’ which had an apple, an orange, and something else, all very good. The lobby is unpretentious but inviting with several restaurants attached. My room was small but nicely furnished and came with a balcony overlooking a small park, unusual in the center of the city. The room was clean but far from impeccably so. (The carpets could use a good cleaning.) The bath was dated but not cramped. There was a well-kept roof-top swimming pool where you could relax surrounded by the not-so-muted sound of city traffic, but no potted palms. In the massage parlor the ladies could be yours for 800 yuan, all “very beautiful,” so I was told by two well dressed male attendants who awoke and jumped to their feet when I stumbled in at 8 pm looking for the pool. (I don’t know if the price is negotiable.) The hotel in conveniently located in the center of the city and features one very charming English speaking (barely) desk clerk, a godsend if you don’t speak Chinese. (English of any caliber is not common mid-level Haikou hotels.) All in all, the HNA Business Hotel a good value for the budget business traveler or tourist, but be aware that it seems to have several different names on the net.
